When I'm trying to connect to my friend's game, I see error message that my serial number is already in use?

How can I fix this problem?

EDIT: and changing serial number don't help.

Make sure you both use legal copies of the game.

This can actually happen if the registry entries are corrupted, but 98% of the time it's an illegal copy.
